  • Valencia were beaten 1–0 at home against Atlético Madrid on Monday evening.
  • Antoine Griezmann scored the only goal in the game to score all three points.
  • A goal was rejected by VAR in the first half after a foul on Joo Felix

  • Valencia new signer Edison Cavani watches the game from the stands

Valencia welcomed new signer Edinson Cavani to the Mestalla, but were then defeated 1–0 by Atletico Madrid, inspired by Antoine Griezmann.

Griezmann gets a little over half an hour these days, but that was all he needed to score his second score of the season and win the game.

Atletico denies he is starting on the bench because if he plays for more than 45 minutes in 14 matches this season they are bound by a contract to sign him for 40 million euros and give him two more years . But he has come in as a second-half substitute in Atletico’s opening three games.

Simeone defeated Griezmann and Thomas Lemar in 64 minutes and combined in 120 seconds to win the game for Atlético.

Lemar ousted Hugo Gilmone and fed Griezmann, who has scored more goals against Valencia than any other La Liga side. His shot from the edge of the field hit Carlos Soler’s hand and went past wrong-footed Giorgi Mamardashvili to give Atletico the lead.

It was tough for Valencia and their keeper, whose saves in both the half helped keep Atletico at bay and maintain the score late. Valencia supporters will win a few hearts with the spirit shown by their team and the arrival of Cavani at the stadium to salute the fans. The 35-year-old Uruguay striker drew applause from supporters before kick-off.

The first half was feudal. Referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernández has been known to expect a busy night with the team coached by Simeone against the team coached by Gennaro Gattuso – and of course by half the time he was required to lie in a dark room.

The tackle took off from the first whistle and Saul Niguez and Marcos Andre were booked in the first 20 minutes. Simeon was then booked by the referee for trespassing on what looked like the first goal again.

Former Arsenal midfielder Yunus Musah bowled the ball from a distance to Yan Oblak, but Cuadra was alerted to a foul earlier on Joo Felix by Moctar Dykhabi and denied the goal.

Valencia walked away thinking they were 1-0 up thinking they were a man down. Thierry Correa fouled Morata and the referee interpreted him as the last man to show red. Valencia players surrounded the official and he eventually downgraded the red to yellow and decided that Morata was running from goal when he reviewed the incident pitch-side.

There were chances as both sides looked dangerous in the last third. Mamardashvili saved well from his feet before the break, first from Felix and then from Morata.

Griezmann’s scoring against Valencia was his undoing in the end. Atletico’s strength in depth is such that they can justify ousting the World Cup winner, especially when he scores off the bench which he has now done in two of Atletico’s opening three matches.
