Liverpool are ‘ready to make late £42m move for Brighton star Moises Caicedo’

Liverpool are reportedly making a £42million bid for Brighton midfielder Moises Cassado in the final few days of the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old, who signed for £4.5m from the Independent in February 2021, has caught the attention of the Premier League’s top six teams this season after impressing under Graham Potter.

Jurgen Klopp is already battling an injury crisis with Thiago, Curtis Jones, Nabi Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Anfield in the center of the park.

This has left the Reds boss looking at the market once again and according to The Sun, Liverpool are preparing a big bid for Ecuador.

Reports of a £42 million bid were sent back to Potter at his Monday press conference and the Seagulls manager said any potential suitors would need to pay more than double that figure to turn away from Amex.

Potter said: ‘In football you never know, but we are quite calm and confident.

‘You’ll probably get her shoes for her from the president – maybe! £100m? They can try.

I am not surprised that people are watching him because he is playing at a great level.

‘As soon as you research him, you realize he is a top kid, great guy, youngster, playing in the Premier League, he has all the qualities of playing at the very highest level.’

As well as Liverpool, Caicedo has also been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal, but Potter is confident he will remain on the south coast beyond Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Potter, whose side made a bid to extend their unbeaten start to the season at Fulham on Tuesday night, added: ‘No surprises, but we know what position he is in and we know what position the club is in. That’s why we don’t want to lose him.

‘We don’t think we will, but in football you never know. It is so, but we are quite calm and confident.

Caicedo’s value has soared since joining Seagulls for £4.5m from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle in February 2021.

He made eight Premier League appearances last season after helping Ecuador reach the World Cup final in Qatar and this time has played every minute in the top flight as the Seagulls soar to fourth place.

Brighton finished ninth last season under Potter, winning three of their first four league matches.

However, Potter believes his young midfielder is worth £100 million and is confident of retaining him.

A 1-0 win against Leeds at the Amex Stadium on Saturday moved up 10 points to second-placed Manchester City with Manchester City and Tottenham, but Potter is paying little attention to his lofty position.

He added: ‘Maybe if we’re here to play four games, we can be more excited. We have to be satisfied with our start and we are positive.

‘Ten points from four matches is a great comeback and we are happy with it, but we need to keep calm and keep doing our best.’

Potter will give Joel Veltman a late fitness test before the game at Craven’s Cottage. He was forced out against Leeds after the Dutch defender suffered a neck injury.

Adam Lallana will be ruled out until October with a calf injury, while Jacob Moder and Jeremy Sarmiento (both knees) are still out.
