A flight attendant tragically died of a heart attack mid-air during a flight from Bahrain to Paris.

Air Steward Yasir Saleh Al Yazidi fell ill on Gulf Air flight GF-19, which took off from Bahrain International at 1.40am on Tuesday and was headed for Paris Charles de Gaulle airport.

The pilots of the Airbus A321 were forced to make an emergency landing in Erbil in Iraq’s Kurdistan region so that Yasir could receive medical attention.

The aircraft was met by a medical team who immediately shifted the injured cabin crew member to a nearby hospital. He was declared dead on arrival.

Ahmad Hoshiar, the director of Erbil airport, told Iraqi media that the plane was hovering at 34,000 feet over Iraq when Yasir became ill.

The flight was grounded for nearly four hours at Erbil International Airport before passengers were able to continue their journey to the French capital.

A Gulf Air statement released in the wake of Yasir’s death said: ‘The national carrier extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the crew member, and confirms that the flight will resume to Paris as scheduled. Started from

The statement continued, “Gulf Air assures that the safety of its passengers and crew is at the top of its priorities, and thanks the passengers of the affected flight for their patience and understanding.”

Cabin crew are generally trained to administer basic first aid and all aircraft are equipped with basic first aid kits and medical supplies.

But most commercial flights do not travel with specialist medical equipment and unless a doctor is on board, pilots are required to make an emergency landing at a suitable airport should a serious medical problem arise during flight.
