Croatian model flouts Muslim Qatar's draconian dress code rules by wearing series of daring outfits

A Croatia supporter and model has insisted she feels comfortable wearing her daring World Cup outfit in Qatar without fear of arrest despite strict decency rules in the conservative country.

Ivana Knoll said she was initially ‘exasperated’ after reading the dress code restrictions for the Gulf state advised both male and female visitors to dress ‘modestly’ in public.

But the 26-year-old said officials are ‘not creating any problems’ for her, with her more than 700,000 Instagram followers receiving updates on her many outfit choices during the tournament.

Ms Noll wore a full-length red and white checked dress with a hood for Croatia’s opening game against Morocco.

Her social media posts during the trip, featuring her wearing a swimsuit and bikini, have received both supportive and critical comments from users.

Ms Knoll said what she was doing was not hurting others, however, saying: ‘And how do I think my dress or bikini could hurt someone? Please explain to me.

Ms Noll attended her country’s second tie with Canada in a skimpy red and white checked dress and posed for selfies with supporters before the game.

The UK Foreign Office advised visitors to Qatar that women are expected to cover their shoulders and not wear short skirts.

Influencer Ms Noll, speaking to PA news agency outside the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, said: ‘First I was wondering if the World Cup is happening there (Qatar), of course they need us to make it comfortable for all the fans. will allow. Without any restrictions.

‘Then I heard about the rules and I was shocked. The dress code forbids showing shoulders, knees, stomach and everything and I was like ‘oh my god, I don’t even have clothes to cover all this’.

‘I was very angry because if I am not a Muslim and if we respect hijab and niqab in Europe, I think they should respect our way of life, our religion as well and finally I don’t want to wear clothes, bikinis. Must wear because I’m a Catholic from Croatia who came here for the World Cup.

‘But when I arrived I was surprised that they weren’t making a problem about dressing, they allow you to wear whatever you want – except in government buildings, and in the end it’s fine.’

Asked if she felt there was any risk of being arrested for her outfit, Ms Knoll replied: ‘I’m never scared of anything like that.’

However, ahead of the World Cup, Qatari officials warned that those violating the strict dress code could face prosecution in the ultra-Orthodox nation.

‘Visitors (men as well as women) are expected to demonstrate respect for local culture by refraining from overly revealing clothing in public,’ Qatar Tourism Authority warned ahead of World Cup.

‘It is generally recommended for men and women to ensure that their shoulders and knees are covered.’

Several of Knoll’s posts on Wednesday also tagged FIFA, which reiterated Qatar’s strict rules regarding clothing

While Noll’s first dress at the World Cup revealed her chest, at least it covered most of her body, including a hood.

The latest swimsuit outfit from her patriotic wardrobe hews very closely to the modesty lines outlined by Qatari officials before the start of the World Cup.

‘Ello Police Qatar’, a user posted on a video of Miss Knoll parading in a skimpy swimsuit on the coast of Doha.

‘Respect the country and our religion wtf?’ another asked.

Despite the online criticism, the influencer, who splits her time between Croatia and the United States, said she is getting a positive response on the ground in Doha.

‘The reactions have been great, she said.’

‘Many people from Qatar came up to me to pose for photos.

‘If they hate it and they have something against it, they won’t do it. I think it’s just another way of life, me and them.’

Ms Noll said she was used to people asking for photographs, noting the 2018 World Cup in Russia attracted a lot of attention and went ‘viral’ online.

Asked about Croatia’s chances at the 2022 tournament, Ms Knoll said: ‘I want at least what France got from us in Russia – at least that, nothing less.’

France beat Croatia 4-2 in the World Cup final in Russia.
