26 October, Kathmandu. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has passed a landmark resolution empowering President Xi Jinping.
The “historic resolution” was passed in the sixth session of the CCP’s central meeting. According to CNN, the party’s important resolution on “significant achievements and historical experience” has been passed.
With the “historic resolution” being passed for the third time in the party’s 10-year history, President Xi seems to be documenting his authority and wants to become powerful and carry on his legacy for the foreseeable future.
This is the third time the CCP has passed a “historic resolution”. Earlier, historic resolutions passed in 1954 and 1981 strengthened the power and authority of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.
A statement issued by the state-run Xinhua news agency on Thursday said the party, led by Xi, had “resolved a number of unresolved issues on the agenda and completed a number of expected and unfulfilled tasks”.
Similarly, the resolution states that “to ensure that all the members of the party work in unison, we strongly support the basic position of the Central Committee and Comrade C within the party and encourage the authority of the Central Committee and the centralized and unified leadership of the Committee.”
In 2018, the Chinese parliament removed the presidential term from the constitution, paving the way for Xi to rule for life. At the same time, Xi has succeeded in establishing his own political ideology and mentioning it in the party’s constitution. With such a move, it is clear that his ambition has increased since he became President.
Earlier, only Mao and Deng had taken such a step. The resolution passed in 1945, along with the purge campaign, established Mao’s monopoly power.
Recently, under Xi’s leadership, China has begun to adopt a more authoritarian policy. He has been strengthening his grip within the party. Similarly, they have been taking a strong and aggressive stance even in international relations.
